Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut has been stirring conversations, even before its release. Originally titled “Pussy Island,” the film was recently renamed “Blink Twice” after facing significant backlash. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kravitz revealed that the decision came after some women expressed discomfort with the term “pussy.”
“Interestingly enough, after researching it, women were offended by the word,” Kravitz explained. She had hoped to reclaim the word and challenge societal discomfort, but realized that society isn't ready yet. The MPAA and various movie theaters were also hesitant to promote the film under its original title. Despite initial resistance, Kravitz now embraces the new title, although she initially stood by “Pussy Island” as the essence of the story.
“Blink Twice” follows a cocktail waitress, played by Naomi Ackie, who gets entangled with a tech mogul, portrayed by Channing Tatum, and travels to his private island where unexpected and chilling events unfold. A test screener described the film as a “white-knuckle thrill ride,” particularly praising the last 30 minutes for its intense suspense and violence. Tatum delivers a career-best performance, while Ackie's portrayal is hailed as her finest work yet.
The star-studded cast also includes Simon Rex, Christian Slater, Alia Shawkat, Geena Davis, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, and a cameo by Kyle MacLachlan. The screenplay, co-written by Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum, draws inspiration from real-life stories of powerful men exploiting women on remote islands.
Supported by Steven Soderbergh, who believes Kravitz is poised for a strong directorial debut, “Blink Twice” is already generating significant buzz. The trailer has captivated audiences, and the film is set for an August 23 release in theaters, distributed by MGM/Amazon.
With a compelling storyline and a remarkable cast, “Blink Twice” promises to be a must-watch thriller that tackles provocative themes head-on. Don't miss it!
