Bowling comedies are rare, but The Gutter looks ready to change that. Starring Shameik Moore, this indie sports comedy from brothers Isaiah and Yassir Lester takes aim at the quirky world of bowling with outrageous humor. With the trailer now out, audiences can get a sneak peek at the laughs in store!
The story follows Walt (Moore), a down-on-his-luck bartender at a failing bowling alley called AlleyCatz. When he discovers an unexpected talent for bowling, he's pressured into going pro in hopes of saving the alley. Along the way, he faces off against an over-the-top bowling champion played by Susan Sarandon, who hilariously channels a “Karen” in her villainous role. The plot might sound familiar to fans of Kingpin, but The Gutter brings its own fresh, irreverent twist to the genre.
The Gutter premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and will hit the London Film Festival next, although a general release date is still pending. It's clear from the trailer that the film has a strong comedic cast, with Jay Ellis, D'Arcy Carden, Jackée Harry, and Paul Reiser joining Moore and Sarandon. Directed by Isaiah and Yassir Lester, who are making their feature debut, the film promises plenty of belly laughs while poking fun at bowling culture and the underdog story.
If you love a good sports comedy with a unique spin, The Gutter looks like it'll be right up your alley. Be sure to check out the first trailer and keep an eye out for its release!
