Wagner Moura, best known for playing Colonel Nascimento in the kickass Brazilian films
Elite Squad 1 and
2, will be playing a smart, wicked villain with a biting sense of humor, in
Neill Blomkamp's thriller
Elysium.
Young Moura is the latest addition to the sci-fi project, being made by MRC. He'll star opposite
Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley and presumably
Jodie Foster. Sony will theatrically release high-profile picture on August 9th, 2013.
Elysium is “an unabashedly big movie”, and has the same social metaphor of
District 9. Damon will be playing an ex-convict and is also revealed that social classes play a major role in the world. Everything else is hidden under blankets. The film will begin pre-production in April and start shooting in Vancouver this July before moving on to shoot in Mexico City in the autumn.
“Elysium” is a good opportunity for Moura to make his Hollywood debut; after all, no one really knew who Sharlto Copley was until “District 9.” Since there will be a four year gap between “District 9” and “Elysium,” Blomkamp has enough time to prove that he's not just a one hit wonder. Canadian director employs a documentary-style, hand-held, blending naturalistic and computer-generated effects. Time named Blomkamp as one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2009.
Further more, production designer
Syd Mead, a.k.a. the ‘visual futurist,' who created many of the outstanding designs for
Blade Runner will be designing sets for this project. Mead also worked on such films as
Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Tron, Aliens and even designing
Johnny 5.
So, in 2012 we have two huge science fiction treats — veteran
Ridley Scott returns to the genre with his original
Prometheus in March and flourishing Neil Blomkamp with his original concept” Elysium”. Both Greek mythology linked titles.
Stay tuned for more information as more develops.
