Universal Pictures has reportedly hired
Anthony Peckham (
Sherlock Holmes) to script a film that is designed as a follow-up to 2012s
The Bourne Legacy, continuing the story of
Jeremy Renner‘s character Aaron Cross.
The fifth installment is still in the early stages of development and there's no word yet on whether
Tony Gilroy will be involved with
Bourne 5. The studio might bring in both a new writer and directorial talent to give the franchise a boost and keep it fresh.
Peckham also has some experience in the globe-trotting thriller genre as he wrote an early script draft for the upcoming
Jack Ryan franchise restart.
The fourth installment in the Bourne movie franchise wasn't much of a hit, but Universal was obviously still interested in pursuing a sequel.
There's no word whether the studio will bring
Matt Damon back to join Renner. He refused to return for a fourth
Jason Bourne film without
Paul Greengrass.
Renner's Cross was a new agent introduced in Legacy who had been enhanced medically to be smarter and physically superior than other agents as part of Operation Outcome until he was targeted for termination.
