As we previously reported, the movie takes place after the events of 2006's
X-Men: The Last Stand, and revolves around Jackman's character who is now isolated in Japan where he will:
…face a host of unexpected and deadly opponents in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality.
Or, as Jackman previously revealed:
You see Logan at his lowest point at the beginning of this movie; the tragedy of his wasted life. For the sake of not only himself but everyone around him, he thinks it's better to be away because when he comes back to the world, there's destruction and pain.
