As movie fans and celebrity enthusiasts wait for the Oscar Awards 2011 – Hollywood’s most glamorous night – this Sunday, film buffs are also excited for the prelude of the big event, the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards 2011. More popularly known as the Spirit Awards 2011, the awards show is a celebration honoring films made by filmmakers who embody independence and who dare to challenge the status quo.

The Spirit Awards 2011 will be broadcast on IFC (Independent Film Channel) starting at 10 p.m. ET tonight and Joel McHale is the perfect host!
Spirit Awards 2011 are traditionally on Saturday afternoon on the beach in Santa Monica, the day before the Academy Awards.
The awards are presented annually to American independent filmmakers for movies that do not cost more than $20 million to produce, are over 70 minutes long and have played for at least one week in a commercial theater or at least one film festival from a designated group of six festivals (Los Angeles Film Festival, New Directors/New Films, New York, Sundance, Telluride, or Toronto).
