“
Sex and the City” has beat off competition from Indiana Jones to become the number one movie at the US box-office last weekend. The film, which stars
Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and
Kristin Davis, took a huge $55.7 million from 3,285 theaters across North America, to become the top opening R-rated comedy of all time, beating 1999’s
American Pie.
“We’ve been waiting years for this,” says Patricia Ackerman, 42, who went with four girlfriends dressed more like they were headed to a premiere than a Saturday matinee. “This is our Indiana Jones.”
“
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull” was knocked into second place, dropping 54% of its take from its first weekend, a still respectable $46 million. The
Steven Spielberg directed film has now taken a little over $216 million after just over a week of being on release.
Horror flick “
The Strangers“, which stars
Liv Tyler, opened at number three taking $20.7 million, its success following great word-of-mouth while “
Iron Man” held on in at number four with another $14 million under it’s iron belt.
