Back in February,
Jimmy Palmiotti and
Phil Noto's two-issue 2005 sci-fi western comic book,
The New West, would be heading to the big screen with Benderspink and Wizard magazine founder, Gareb Shamus.
Now comes word that
Ryan Engle, who recently performed on-set production scriptwriting work for the Liam Neeson's Non-Stop actioner has been hired to write the script for The New West for New Regency's producer
Len Wiseman.
Wiseman, who is helming Total Recall remake, likely will not direct. The story is set in Los Angeles in the near future, but logline for the movie is being kept under wraps.
The plot in the comic book, penned by Palmiotti and illustrated by Noto, centers on a bomb creating an electromagnetic pulse that causes all technology to stop working in Los Angeles. People either pick up their bicycles or they're on horseback. Our hero, retired LAPD detective actually gets to use his horse, he has a samurai sword and he runs around L.A. to rescue the kidnapped mayor.
Engle also adapted the Midway video game Rampage for New Line, which was set up by John Rickard.
No confirmed release date, and no details about the cast, but check back here for more details on the project as they emerge.
