Universal Pictures has just acquired the rights to the original spec script
Don't Mess with Texas by
David Feeney and
John Quaintance (Ben and Kate), which has
Reese Witherspoon and
Sofia Vergara attached to star.
Universal opted to put the film on the fast track with plans to start production next March, putting release presumably in the midst of 2015′s summer blockbuster season. Witherspoon will also produce along with
Dana Fox and
Bruna Papandrea.
Until
Bridesmaids, getting female-driven comedies to the big screen has been very hard, but time has changed since then. Such is the case with
Don't Mess with Texas that will follow a police officer and a prisoner who are on the run in Texas as they're being pursued by a gang of crooked cops.
This is a movie we have seen before just with male leads, thus the appeal of such a rehash.
Witherspoon just opened opposite
Matthew McConaughey in
Jeff Nichols'
Mud and will soon be seen in Atom Egoyan's
Devil's Knot, a true-life drama about the West Memphis Three. She is attached to various project such as
Inherent Vice, Passengers, and
Three Little Words.
Vergara, who is currently filming
Simon West's
Heat will soon be seen shooting bullets from her boobs in Robert Rodriguez's
Machete Kills and is going to work with
Jon Favreau on
Chef next.
Let's just say it: the so-called ‘Bridesmaids' wave hasn't failed to materialize to date.
