The Twilight Zone movie project that is to be produced by
Leonardo DiCaprio has had a REALLY hard time trying to make it through production ‘purgatory' (or hell, however you look at it).
The project has been in the making and passing through the Hollywood system since 2008, has undergone rewrites from Jason Rothenberg,
Joby Harold, and Tony Peckham, and while it came close to getting made when
Matt Reeves was hired to direct the film in October last year, he ended up moving on to make
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes instead.
We have no idea if a new Twilight Zone movie will ever actually happen, but at least now we know what it will be about and can hope for the best.
Unlike the last time
Rod Serling‘s most famous TV show got the film adaptation (the one from 1983 with
Dan Aykroyd), the new movie will only tell one tale of terror and
Vulture has apparently found out exactly what it is. Mentioned in a feature about how time travel movies are becoming the next big thing, the site says that the new Twilight Zone movie will be about
“a test pilot who winds up breaking the speed of light; when he puts down his craft, he discovers that he's landed a bit late for supper — 96 years late.”
So it's the story of a man jumping into the future and leaving the world of everything he knows behind – kind of like
Captain America, but without the whole superhero characterization.
I'm still not quite sure why the movie is being called The Twilight Zone movie when it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the original show, but one simply does not fight the power of branding. Maybe the next director that gets his hands on this will question the idea and get the project made into something wholly original – as it should be.
