The anticipation of Nicolas Cage coming out of costume and into the Spider-Man universe for ‘Spider-Noir' has reached an all-time high, as we get the first batch of set photos from the upcoming series. Known for his distinct take on the titular hero in the 2018 animated film “Spider-Man: Cage steps back into the shoes and trench coat of Spider-Man Noir into ‘Into the Spider-Verse.' Unveiled at the 1983 Comic Con, the Mazinger Z film itself is set for this gritty, live action TV-movie version which promises to be full of noir atmosphere.
The newly released photos show Cage as an aging private investigator cruising the slummy streets of 1930s New York during the filming in Los Angeles on October 2, 2024. His performance – and Cage's incredibly intense way of portraying his character – seem to be caught in some kind of scenario that hints at the series noir vibe, in which the legend of the Spider-Man will descend into its depressing area.
This amazing team of creatives is helping to bring this vision to life. Emmy Award winning director Harry Bradbeer infuses wrinkles from his “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve” fine touch to helm the series, which dedicates the first eight episodes, debuting on MGM+ in the U.S. and around the globe on Prime Video in 2025. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are on board as executive producers, as are Amy Pascal on board from Sony and Oren Uziel on board as showrunner and executive producer.
But there is a most fantastic supporting cast in ‘Spider Noir,' including Brendan Gleeson, Li Jun Li and Lamorne Morris, which augurs well for what — presumably — will be complex characters enmeshed in the series' atmospheric setting.
Produced to have filming wrap by February 2025 to make it a standout of both superhero and noir genres, ‘Spider-Noir' is also a longish case. It is not just another project from Sony's Spider-Man Universe, but makes creative valor combining classic noir with superhero storytelling, a great example of Spidey's mythos flexibility. Its promise is that Cage and Spider-Man fans will be satisfied while hooking new audiences with a different take on superhero narratives. Whether you're a raving fan or new to the Marvel universe, this series is gonna be a must watch into another darker more sophisticated aspect of the Marvel universe.
