Warner Bros.has hired
Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) to write the screenplay for
Green Lantern 2.
Goldenberg, whose credits also include Contact, Where The Wild Things Are and Peter Pan, will be working from a story outline by
Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and
Marc Guggenheim, who wrote the first Green Lantern script.
Goldenberg carried out a rewrite on the first film, which has just finished filming in Louisiana and is now moving into an FX-heavy period of post-production.
Green Lantern, directed by
Martin Campbell and also stars
Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins, Mark Strong, Blake Lively and
Angela Bassett, is scheduled to hit 3D and 2D theaters on June 17, 2011. It is rumored that
Green Lantern 2 will be released in theaters just one year after the first film. And if box office results will be as predicted, Warners will work on getting the third installment into theaters by 2013.
Dave McNary at Variety also points out how this is one of the first DC Comics properties to move forward with a sequel at WB that isn't Batman or Superman. Both, Batman and Superman aren't being forgotten as both properties have new films expected on the horizon, including Christopher Nolan's return to the Batman franchise with Batman 3 currently at the scripting stage with David Goyer and Jonah Nolan putting pen to paper for a planned July 20, 2012 release date.
