Peacock is set to launch its latest comedy series, Laid, on December 19, 2024, and the newly released teaser trailer hints at an outrageous and darkly humorous ride. Co-created by Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe) and Sally Bradford McKenna, the show is based on the 2011 Australian series of the same name, but it takes a bolder and more absurd approach. The story centers around Ruby, played by Academy Award-nominated actress Stephanie Hsu, who discovers that all of her ex-lovers are dying in strange, unexpected ways. In an effort to break the cycle, Ruby embarks on a quest to reconnect with her past and solve the mystery.
A Twisted Take on Romantic Comedy
The premise of Laid brings a fresh twist to the rom-com genre. As Ruby retraces her romantic history, with the help of her best friend AJ (Zosia Mamet), she learns that her past relationships may be haunted by something far more sinister than bad luck. With the clock ticking, the pair hilariously attempts to warn Ruby's exes—whether they're former flames, one-night stands, or the man she only remembers as “Green Day Shirt”—that they might be next in line. The show's tagline humorously addresses the question of whether Ruby is to blame for her dating woes: “Yes, there is. The problem is definitely you.”

An Ensemble Cast and Talented Crew
In addition to Hsu and Mamet, the cast features Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez in supporting roles, alongside exciting guest appearances by Finneas O'Connell, Olivia Holt, Chloe Fineman, and John Early. The creative team behind the series brings a wealth of comedy experience, with episodes directed by Maurice Marable and Nahnatchka Khan. The show's writing team, including Abbey Caldwell and Jeff Chiang, ensures that the humor remains sharp and the narrative intriguing.
Why Laid Is Worth the Watch
What makes Laid stand out is its willingness to take the romantic comedy genre into darker, more unpredictable territory. The combination of absurd humor and existential dread creates a unique viewing experience, tapping into modern dating frustrations while keeping audiences entertained with its bizarre premise. The chemistry between Hsu and Mamet, based on the teaser alone, promises to be a major highlight, with Hsu's comedic timing perfectly complementing the series' twisted tone.
Laid looks like a refreshingly twisted addition to the comedy landscape, blending romance and dark humor with a quirky premise. Stephanie Hsu's charm and the bold storytelling approach make this series stand out among the usual rom-com fare. It's rare to see a show that tackles both the absurdity and horror of dating so boldly, and Laid seems to do it with just the right mix of irreverence and wit.
