Although he did not graduate in the college of electrical engineering, director
Antoine Fuqua has the opportunity to use the knowledge and skills he gained during his studies – he has been offered to direct Relativity Films' submarine thriller
Hunter Killer.
Adapted from the novel Firing Point by George Wallace and Don Keith, which has not yet been released (July 2012), the film is about ‘an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy SEAL team to rescue Russia's president, who has been taken prisoner during a military coup, in an effort to stop a rogue Russian General from igniting World War III.'
No doubt, the Cold War seems to be coming back into fashion as a storytelling subject.
Phillip Noyce was previously, going to make the film, but he dropped out last month; Taken helmer Pierre Morel was also green lighted by Relativity at one point.
Fuqua, who has been left in the lurch with projects falling away (Tupac Shakur biopic and the Eminem led boxing flick Southpaw) was tapped by Relativity for a sci-fi action film
Afterburn that had
Gerard Butler (Machine Gun Preacher) attached to star. Not much has happened since November, but Afterburn was also a Relativity deal so this signing isn't a surprise. And Butler is also in talks for one of the leading roles in the submarine thriller. That's how things work.
Besides, Fuqua has signed on to direct a feature-length documentary about controversial Death Row Records co-founder Marion ‘Suge' Knight for American cable network Showtime.
Jamie Moss, John Kolvenbach and Arne Schmidt are the writing team behind Hunter Killer that is slated to open on Dec. 21, 2012. No word on casting as yet.
‘It's time for some good old NY street cops drama – deep, dark and complex like cinema should be.'
