When it comes to blockbuster films, securing the perfect soundtrack can be as challenging as nailing the script or casting the lead roles. In the case of the much-anticipated movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the task was nothing short of herculean. The duo aimed high and set their sights on using Madonna's 1989 hit “Like a Prayer” for a pivotal scene. Here's the inside scoop on how they pulled it off.

In a recent interview with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM, Reynolds, Jackman, and director Shawn Levy recounted their extraordinary journey to secure the iconic track. Understanding the magnitude of their request, the trio knew they couldn't just rely on standard industry protocols. Instead, they needed to approach the Queen of Pop herself.

“It did involve a personal visit to Madonna,” Levy explained, detailing their unconventional strategy. They didn't just pitch the idea over a phone call or email. Reynolds and Jackman, along with Levy, made a pilgrimage to Madonna's residence to show her the sequence where her song would be featured.

Madonna, known for her selective licensing, particularly for such a legendary song, didn't make it easy. “Madonna doesn't just license that song, especially not ‘Like a Prayer',” Reynolds emphasized. It was clear that their visit was a rare audience with pop royalty. Reynolds even joked about the protocol of addressing her, recounting his nerves in asking if he could simply call her “Madonna.”

Their personal approach paid off. Madonna not only granted them permission to use the song but also provided valuable feedback on the scene. Reynolds and Levy both highlighted how her insight led to a new recording session within 48 hours to incorporate her notes, ultimately enhancing the sequence.

The film, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” sees Reynolds and Jackman reprising their beloved roles in a new adventure, promising fans an epic blend of humor, action, and now, an unforgettable soundtrack moment. Set to hit theaters on July 26, this movie is already generating buzz, not just for its star-studded cast and crew but for this unique collaboration with Madonna.

In a world where the right song can elevate a movie scene to iconic status, the team behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” has shown that creativity, persistence, and a bit of star power can indeed work wonders. This July, fans will get to see – and hear – the magic for themselves.
