Back in March, the buzz about Adam Sandler working on a sequel to his 1995 cult classic comedy “Happy Gilmore” had fans of the original film eagerly anticipating more hijinks on the green. Now, the wait is almost over, as “Happy Gilmore 2” is set to start filming this September.
For those unfamiliar with the original (where have you been?!), Sandler's character, a failed hockey player who unexpectedly excels on the pro golf tour, became an instant fan favorite. Despite only making $38 million at the box office, “Happy Gilmore” found its true success in the home video market, cementing Sandler's role as a comedy icon of the '90s.
The sequel's progression might also clarify why Josh Safdie and Sandler's baseball project faced delays. Safdie, instead, hopped onto the Ping Pong film with Timothee Chalamet, as announced earlier this week. This shuffle in schedules sets the stage for Sandler's grand return to the fairway.
Stepping into the director's shoes for this installment is Kyle Newacheck, known for his work on Netflix's “Murder Mystery,” which starred Sandler alongside Jennifer Aniston and garnered 83 million views, securing its spot as one of Netflix's most-watched movies. Although the legendary Dennis Dugan won't be returning to direct, Newacheck's familiarity with Sandler's comedic style bodes well for the sequel.
Sadly, fans will miss the late Bob Barker's iconic presence. However, Sandler and Barker's legendary fistfight scene lives on in internet glory, forever immortalized by the catchphrase, “The price is wrong, bitch!”
Reflecting on Sandler's career, it's clear that “Happy Gilmore” holds a special place in his filmography. Alongside other ‘90s hits like “Billy Madison” and “The Wedding Singer,” it showcases Sandler's comedic roots. Yet, his artistic prowess extends beyond comedy, with critically acclaimed performances in dramatic roles such as “Uncut Gems,” “Punch-Drunk Love,” and “The Meyerowitz Stories.”
As we await more updates on the cast and crew and an official release date, excitement builds for “Happy Gilmore 2.” Fans of the original and new audiences alike can look forward to more laughs, memorable moments, and, of course, Sandler's unique brand of humor.
