Deadline reports that
David Ayer has been tapped by 20th Century Fox to write and direct a remake of
Commando.
Erwin Stoff and
John Davis will produce.
Ayer is a former Navy soldier who wrote the 2001 movie
Training Day starring
Denzel Washington and
Ethan Hawke and moved into directing with
Harsh Times and Street Kings.
The original movie was released in 1985 and starred
Arnold Schwarzenegger as a retired elite commando on a mission to rescue his daughter (
Alyssa Milano) from an exiled dictator.
The report says that Ayer will have a more real-world feel than the original, in which Arnold Schwarzenegger's daughter was kidnapped and to protect her he had to board a plane and kill the rival of an exiled dictator. The remake will keep the premise, but will see the main character be more of a covert operative.
