First TV spot for “
Anonymous” has been released. It is a period drama set the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, and shows how the scandals of the court were exposed and satirised on the London stage. In support of the “Oxfordian theory”, academics have cited Oxford's (Rhys Ifans) relationships with Queen Elizabeth I (
Vanessa Redgrave) and the Earl of Southampton (
Xavier Samuel), and his knowledge of events of Court life, which crop up in Shakespeare's plays.
“This is, above all, a political film about Elizabethan England, a totalitarian state and culture. The story centres around the question of who will succeed as king… But through that story you learn that the man who wrote these plays could not put his name on it.”
says director
Roland Emmerich.
British classical actor Derek Jacobi narrates. He also narrated the 2000 documentary ‘The Shakespeare Conspiracy'.
David Thewlis, Rafe Spall and Mark Rylance also star. John Orloff provides the script for the film, which will be released to theaters on September 30.
