A new clip featured the minions released today for Illumination Entertainment's supervillain-centered comedy
Despicable Me 2 directed by
Pierre Coffin and
Chris Renaud.
Despicable Me 2 serves as a follow-up to the 2010 hit Despicable Me, which took in a whopping $540 million at the box office. It is currently the 10th biggest animated film in U.S. history.
Steve Carell (super-villain Gru),
Cosgrove, Gaier, and Fisher are all slated to return for the film's sequel. “Bridesmaids” actress
Kristen Wiig, who voiced a sadistic orphanage owner in the first film, is also set to come back for the new movie, though oddly in what seems to be a new role – her character is listed as Lucy Wilde in the “Despicable Me 2” credits, not orphanage owner Miss Hattie. Actor
Russell Brand will reprise his role as Gru's helper Dr. Nefario. Actors
Ken Jeong and
Steve Coogan have come on board for the sequel as well.
Here's the synopsis for the film
Gru (Steve Carrell) is no longer a villain, since saving his three adopted daughters Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Elsie Fisher) from Vector in Despicable Me. But his calm and unexciting new life takes an unexpected turn when he is recruited by Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig) and Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan) and is taken to the headquarters of the Anti-Villain League, a society dedicated to fighting crime on a global scale. There he discovers that there is a new villain called Eduardo (Benjamin Bratt) on the loose and because Gru was once a villain himself and knows how they think, Silas (who is the League's head), wants Gru to help them fight Eduardo. With the help of Gru's assistant, Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand), his minions, and Margo, Edith, and Agnes, can Gru fight Eduardo and save the world?
Despicable Me 2 opens July 3rd, 2013.
