Cristian Mungiu’s BEYOND THE HILLS First Look
Beyond the Hills, Cristian Mungiu's first feature since 2007′s Palme d'Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 is the most likely to be selected for the main competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
Sundance Selects has acquired North American rights to Romanian director's newest movie over the weekend, which he wrote, directed and, with Pascal Cauchteaux and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, also produced.
Based on a true, tragic story, Beyond the Hills is about Alina and Voichita, two young women who grew up together in an orphanage and reunite in an isolated convent in Romania. Alina wants to leave and go to Germany, and wants Voichita to go with her. But Voichita is deeply taken by convent life. When Alina challenges the priest, she is taken to a hospital — and suspected of being possessed.
The priest of the monastery and nuns decided to try an exorcism ritual. In the church of the monastery, Alina was tied to a wooden plank, hungry and without water, as the nuns and the priest prayed for salvation, but too late – she died from exhaustion…
