Warner Bros. has unveiled the first teaser trailer for forthcoming sci-fi horror film Companion, and it certainly is causing a buzz. The film stars Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher, along with an impressive cast of Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, and Megan Suri, all of whom are slated for release on January 10, 2025. Directed by Drew Hancock, helmer of the shorts The Baddest and Baby's First Sentence, this is his feature directorial bow after working the TV projects Jimmy Kimmel Live. With backing from the team behind 2022's cult hit Barbarian, Companion is shaping up to be one of 2025's most anticipated genre releases.
The teaser describes it as “a new kind of love story” and a portrayal of “something very inherently special and wonderful” — “just enough” to get you hooked without revealing any of the plot. But what's certain is the horror/sci fi/romance combination that recalls the film's surprise hit M3gan. Whether it's about androids, mind control, or something completely different, it seems ready to take us on a thrill, or at least a slightly spooky, ride. Indeed, the cryptic teaser coupled with these unsettling glimpses of the relationship Thatcher's character navigates would certainly cut your WTF factor pretty high.
Eli Born's visuals will be eerie as Coupland's Companion is cinematically moody and also as Hemingway for hire, John Valby's playing the trucker-shot and Hrishikesh Hirway's score add layers to the atmospheric angst of the film. With a track record of horror fans, working with the production team of Roy Lee and Zach Cregger will likely only make its more scary.
Will Companion be the slow burn cult classic or the next big hit of horror cinema? One thing's for sure: We're eager to find out what the teaser is talking about.
So mark your calendars and be sure to watch for this one “love story” in January of 2025!
