Steven Lisberger (Producer/Writer/Actor) acknowledged on October 28, 2010, before the movie released, that a sequel was officially in production and that
Adam Horowitz and
Eddie Kitsis, screenwriters for
Tron: Legacy, were in the early stages of producing a new script. It's guessed that
Tron 3 could be the first episode in a new trilogy.
A follow-up animated series called
Tron: Uprising is under way and will have its firstshowing later in the year of 2012 on the Disney XD network across the U.S. “Tron: Legacy's” writers
Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis have disclosed that the ten-part miniseries will seek to tell the story of what happened in the grid between movies. Actors aligned as voices for the animation include
Bruce Boxleitner, Elijah Wood, Linda Moore, Paul Reubens and
Lance Henriksen.

It took 28 years between the first and second film and now that Disney deems they have a valid franchise on their hands, they're going to start with it. Look no more than three things: the casting of
Cillian Murphy in an almost off the cuff role as a potential villain, the unlimited ending to “Tron: Legacy” itself and the news of two cartoon series' coming in following years to fulfill the moviewatchers and keep the franchise fresh.
As of January 11, 2011, the film has grossed $149,718,954 in the U.S. and Canada and $143,200,000 globally for a worldwide total of $292,918,954. It surely wasn't the runaway blockbuster that Disney was bargain for, especially with its IMAX box office playing such an important role. That's around $300 million against a reported budget of $170 million and would put Disney, theoretically, in the black way before the DVDs and Blu-rays hit the shelves later this year.
Either you liked TRON: Legacy or not, chances are you'd be interested to see what happens next in the story of
Sam and
Kevin Flynn, Quorra and, surely,
Ed Dillinger Jr.
