It's not every day you get to peek behind the curtain of one of the most beloved fantasy series of all time. Last year, a small group of journalists, including myself, had the unique opportunity to visit the set of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2. Walking through the mud-splattered, intricately designed sets of Middle-earth and Numenor was nothing short of magical. Our adventure brought us face-to-face with the show's creators, Patrick McKay and JD Payne, who shared a wealth of information about the upcoming season.

Darkness Descends on Middle-earth
Season 2 promises a darker tone, embracing the earnestness that defines Middle-earth while steering clear of the cynicism often seen in modern TV. “There's an earnestness to Middle-earth and its stories, and we happily embrace that,” explains McKay. This refreshing approach sets the stage for an intense and gripping season.
Key highlights include:
- Return to the Fortress: Season 2 opens at the same fortress where Galadriel sensed evil in Season 1.
- Adar's Evolution: We will explore Adar's relationship with the orcs and see him stronger than ever.
- Sauron's Cunning: The season delves into Sauron's psychology, revealing how he becomes Middle-earth's most powerful being.

The Making of the Orcs
The show's commitment to practical effects shines in the detailed creation of the orcs. Prosthetics Artist Sarah Gower and Senior Visual Effects Supervisor Jason Smith work meticulously to bring these creatures to life. With 1,500 orc makeups required for Season 2, each orc takes about two and a half hours to prepare. The shift from latex to foam applications allows for more flexibility, crucial for the increased stunt work this season.

Unleashing the Stunts
Stunt Coordinator Ben Cooke shared insights into the extensive preparation for the season's action sequences. Stunt rehearsals began four months before filming, ensuring the scenes are meticulously choreographed. Actors like Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Charlie Vickers (Sauron), and Robert Aramayo (Elrond) perform many of their own stunts, with Galadriel showcasing her badassery in numerous battles.
Expanding Middle-earth
Executive Producer Lindsey Weber and the art department have pulled out all the stops to create immersive and expansive sets. Moving the production from New Zealand to the UK required transporting 70 shipping containers filled with set pieces. Season 2 features 120 physical sets, many of which are new or significantly upgraded.
Highlights of the new sets include:
- Numenor's Throne Room: Enhanced with more gilding and larger lights to make the gold shimmer.
- Khazad-dûm: Bigger and more intricate, showcasing a thriving Dwarven civilization.
- New Locations: The season will explore new areas of the map, adding to the series' rich world-building.

Protecting Middle-earth
Sustainability is a priority for the production team. Supervising Location Manager Finley Bradbury emphasized their efforts to protect natural environments, particularly in Windsor Great Park, where 12 sets were built. This location offers both heavily wooded areas and open fields, ideal for the diverse landscapes of Middle-earth.
A Glimpse of What's to Come
While much remains under wraps, the excitement from the cast and crew is palpable. Showrunners McKay and Payne's passion for the project is infectious, and their commitment to staying true to the essence of Tolkien's world is evident. Season 2 promises to be a thrilling journey, full of new creatures, epic battles, and deep character arcs.
