Remember
last week's report that a “
300” prequel is in development from interviews coming out of the 3
4th Saturn Awards? This morning
Variety is confirming news that probably won't surprise anyone. “300”, the graphic novel adaptation that cost virtually nothing to make but grossed over $200 million last spring, is getting a sequel….probably.
Legendary Pictures, which is also developing “
The Watchmen“, is interested in the graphic novel
Frank Miller is currently working on, which may be a prequel or some kind of spinoff. Most of the characters, including
Gerard Butler‘s King Leonidas, died in the original, making a follow-up tricky.
Zack Snyder won't officially commit until after he sees Miller's take, but he's definitely interested. Legendary considers the project a major priority.
“The vision of Frank Miller's universe that Zack Snyder brought to the screen in ‘300' is unlike anything ever seen before,” Legendary topper Thomas Tull told Variety. “We want to be certain that the story originates with Frank and be as compelling as the first.”
“300” is the #1 All-Time March Opener and #1 All-Time Spring Opener with it gathering up $70.8 mil on March 9-11, 2007. It also became the highest R-rated grosser of 2007 with a domestic gross of $210.6 mil and would go on to gross $456.0 mil worldwide with a budget of only $65 mil.
